The city and thus the province are named after Attalos II, king of Pergamon, who founded the city in the 2nd century BC. Antalya has been settled since prehistoric times. King Attalus 2 of Pergamon discovered Antalya and it was named Attalia in his honour. The city then became part of the Roman Republic when Attalus III, nephew of Attalus II, upon his death, gave the kingdom to Rome in his will. Under Roman rule, like many cities, the city thrived. The Byzantines then ruled Antalya and it became a major city of Turkey. From a commercial view, it started to attract Jews, Armenians, and Italians. Antalya soon became quite isolated and was surrounded by beyliks. Antalya was first settled around 200 BC by the Attalid dynasty of Pergamon which was further subdued by Romans. After a few less punitive centuries, Antalya and the surrounding regions focused on maritime ventures, with Antalya becoming a major port, and for the first time, the city was visited for its historical features and later it became a major port for trade.
